Late Breaking Trials and Emerging Technology

This session previewed new devices and multicenter data spanning venous stenting, thrombectomy and pelvic venous disease.

Stenting and Restenosis

A new coring device for in-stent restenosis showed feasibility in early clinical use after preclinical testing in a pig model, while a large trial of a self-expanding venous stent reported 84 percent primary patency at 12 months in patients with IVC and iliofemoral obstruction.

DVT Thrombectomy Trials

  • The BOLT study evaluated an aspiration system for iliofemoral DVT, with results expected this fall.
  • A new mechanical thrombectomy system reported 85 percent clot burden clearance in a multicenter series.
  • The Defiance randomized trial is comparing mechanical thrombectomy to anticoagulation alone for iliofemoral DVT.

Pelvic Disease and New Tools

The Embolize trial is a sham-controlled study of pelvic vein embolization for venous origin chronic pelvic pain, and a migration-resistant two-stent system was introduced for Nutcracker syndrome. Additional talks presented a calibrated color accuracy score for wound photography and photoacoustic imaging for locating lymphatic vessels.
