Scientific Session 6: Edema, Lymphedema and Vein Ablation
Seasonal Variation in Chronic Venous Insufficiency Edema
Maria Santa Cruz surveyed 1683 patients and found 56.6 percent reported worsened lower extremity edema in summer months, with women reporting significantly more worsening than men and younger age associated with worsening only among female patients, independent of reflux severity.
Early Lymphedema Detection with ICG Lymphography
Miguel Amore presented a case using indocyanine green lymphography after axillary lymphadenectomy, detecting early dermal backflow within five days of surgery and allowing early treatment that kept the patient at stage zero lymphedema two years later.
Foam Sclerotherapy and Accessory Saphenous Ablation
Fanny Santos found foam sclerotherapy of perforator veins achieved 98 percent occlusion at one month but only 58.5 percent at 12 months, with larger vein diameter predicting failure, while John Charitable’s 314 limb study found accessory saphenous thermal ablation safe with 96.5 percent closure.
Quality of Online DVT and PE Patient Resources
Preston Tolbert evaluated 62 websites for deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, finding quality and readability variable and generally written above a ninth grade level, with industry sponsored sites scoring highest on accountability and structure.
