AVF Session: Research Priorities, Registries, and Collaboration
Research Priorities and the JURE Trials
An AVF Research Committee retreat ranked varicose vein etiology, biological drivers of disease progression, and healthcare equity as the top future research priorities for C2 disease. Updates on the JURE studies found equivalent symptom scores whether or not junctional reflux is present, supporting reimbursed ablation of symptomatic axial reflux regardless of junctional status.
A Decade of AVF-SVS Venous Registries
Ten years into the AVF-SVS quality registry collaboration, the filter and varicose vein registries have matured enough to support benchmarking of complication and retention rates, while the newer venous stent registry continues to grow, with a deep vein thrombosis registry now in development.
Collaboration Barriers and Lessons from a Global Registry
A talk on collaboration barriers highlighted funding, bureaucracy, and competing incentives as obstacles to joint research. Data from the international RIETE registry showed that optimal anticoagulation duration, and the balance of recurrence against bleeding risk, differs by whether patients present with DVT or pulmonary embolism, by cancer type, and by thrombocytopenia severity.
