AVF Awards Session: Grant Updates and Abstract Honors
Best Abstract and Research Grant Updates
A European Venous Forum award winning meta analysis found direct oral anticoagulants significantly reduced VTE recurrence compared to low molecular weight heparin in cancer patients, with a slightly higher bleeding risk in gastrointestinal malignancies. Basic science grant recipients reported that sirolimus reduced venous endothelial inflammation and vein wall fibrosis pathways relevant to stent restenosis, with continuing work on varicose vein genetics and inflammatory cytokine signaling.
Jobst Grant Progress
Jobst award recipients presented a new rodent model for studying venous stent healing and antithrombotic regimens, a wireless sub bandage pressure sensor for guiding compression therapy, and early data showing that intravenous hydration measurably increases iliac vein caliber, suggesting a way to distinguish pathologic compression from a normal anatomic variant before stenting.
Traveling Fellowships and Awards
Juzo traveling fellows described visits to leading centers for vascular malformations, deep venous disease, and pulmonary embolism response teams, building international collaborations. The session closed with recognition of the year’s top oral abstract, poster presentations, and case competition finalists.
