Venous Leg Ulcers and Mortality

A retrospective study found patients with a history of venous leg ulcers had higher all cause mortality, with older age and ulcer history independently associated with risk, while prior varicose vein treatment was linked to lower risk.

Ablation Technique and Safety

Comparisons of radiofrequency and microfoam ablation of the small saphenous vein, tumescence assisted microfoam of larger veins, and a new automatic mode welding device reported strong closure rates. Ablating the great saphenous vein soon after phlebitis showed no added complications.

Disease Biology and Psychological Impact

Transcriptomic analysis of varicose vein tissue showed unexpectedly reduced inflammatory activity centered on collagen exposure and interleukin twelve signaling. A separate study found depression in over a quarter of patients presenting for venous evaluation, correlating with severity scores.

Sclerotherapy Strategy and Complex Cases

A meta analysis of polidocanol microfoam reported severity score improvement and ulcer healing with low thrombotic risk. Staged tributary sclerotherapy performed comparably to concomitant treatment, and a case series described hybrid jugular vein decompression for Eagle syndrome.
